Gilded Dreams

A Collection of Peranakan Chinese Bed Ornaments

Nelson Lim

Published in September 2015

Peranakan Chinese bed ornaments include bolster and pillow ends, curtain hooks and hanging ornaments. They were usually used to adorn nuptial beds. They contain auspicious motifs which were influenced heavily by Chinese culture. Today, these pieces are highly sought after by collectors as they are difficult to come by.

Chinese phrases are used alongside the main English text in the book to summarise the descriptions into interesting Chinese analogies or idioms. They are not direct translations of the English text, but to provide meaningful approaches from the perspectives of the Chinese language for bilingual readers.

  •  In conjunction with the launch of the publication, the exhibition ‘Gilded Dreams’ will be held at library@esplanade from 2 Nov to 30 Dec 2015. The exhibition will feature thirteen pairs of pillow and bolster ends. Admission is free.

  •  Nelson Lim will also share his insights on his collections and the significances of their motifs at the book launch held at library@esplanade on 15 Nov 2015 at 3pm.
